Safer Bodies for STEM Learning: Techie Girl Initiative Impacts Students in Bumoundi Ekpetiama

On Friday, 28th November 2025, the Techie Girl Initiative took its advocacy beyond the walls of tech and STEM as it visited Community Secondary School, Bumoundi Ekpetiama in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State for its outreach themed “The Pad Her Project.” Guided by the powerful tagline “Safer Bodies for STEM Learning,” the team set out to empower students with knowledge that protects both their health and their future.

The outreach brought together over a hundred students—boys and girls—who were eager to learn. Unlike traditional school programs that reserve menstrual or hygiene conversations for girls alone, this session made it clear that boys should no longer be left out. By involving everyone, the Techie Girl Initiative emphasized the importance of building a school environment where empathy, awareness, and shared responsibility thrive.

Holistic Health Education for Young Learners

The session kicked off with practical, clear lessons on menstrual hygiene—how to use a pad correctly, how long to wear it depending on flow, proper disposal methods, and personal cleanliness during menstruation. For many girls, this wasn’t just helpful; it was foundational knowledge shaping their understanding of their bodies.

Dental hygiene was also given strong attention. Students learned the proper way to brush, how often to brush, and easy steps to take during toothaches. By connecting personal health to learning outcomes, the Techie Girl Initiative highlighted the truth that a healthy mind begins with a healthy body.

Dr. Ifiemi Tulagha’s Transformative Body Safety Teaching

The founder, Dr. Ifiemi, delivered what became the most impactful part of the day—a structured, engaging session on body safety. She walked students through the parts of the body that are safe to touch and the areas that must never be violated. She went further to teach them what to do if they ever face molestation, reinforcing that their bodies belong to them and no child should stay silent in danger.

Her message came with assurance: the Techie Girl Initiative stands firmly behind any student who reports molestation. This strong stand on safety aligned perfectly with the program’s vision—children learn better when they feel safe and protected.

A Meaningful Close: Sanitary Pads, Dental Floss & Support

To round off the day, the team distributed sanitary pads and dental floss to the students, ensuring they had not only the knowledge but also the resources to apply what they learned. As the team light-heartedly put it, “No be chochocho alone”—true empowerment requires action.

With The Pad Her Project, the Techie Girl Initiative advanced its mission to equip young people with the confidence, wellbeing, and safety needed to succeed in STEM fields. By prioritizing “safer bodies,” the outreach reminded the community that learning cannot thrive in unsafe spaces—and that every child deserves protection and knowledge.

This visit to Bumoundi Ekpetiama stands as another powerful step toward building healthier, more informed, and more empowered students across Bayelsa State.
