Owerri, 5 October 2026. Armed men attacked two buses carrying National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and other passengers in Imo State. Several travellers remain in captivity.
What is Confirmed?
The attack happened at about 6:30 a.m. on 1 October 2026, along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha, according to the Imo Police Command. The buses were carrying corps members and other passengers from Ibadan to Uyo in Akwa Ibom State and to Bende in Abia State.
Police say the buses were recovered and 10 victims were rescued at the scene. The command said the exact number of people abducted was still being verified. The Army said troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade responded to the incident and rescued prospective corps members, who were handed over to the DSS.
How Many Were Taken: Unconfirmed
Police have not published a final figure, and reports differ. The Tribune reported about 18 NYSC members and other travellers. A transport company said 19 prospective corps members were taken, while Defence Headquarters said 20 passengers. An early Army report put it at about 30. Families say the 10 were not rescued, while unconfirmed sources say the 10 escaped on their own. Police leadership has since spoken of rescuing "the 20 abducted persons." It remains unclear whether the 10 already rescued are part of that 20.
Ransom: Partly Confirmed
The Imo Police spokesperson told the Tribune that the command confirmed a N950 million ransom demand.
Other details come only from families and are unconfirmed:
Reported by families: the kidnappers wanted ₦50 million per victim, about ₦1 billion in total.
Reported by families: the demand was later cut to ₦5 million per victim, N100 million in total, and the captives, including women, have been beaten since Friday. Police have not confirmed the reduction or the beatings.
The Response
The Inspector-General of Police deployed DIG Shehu Umar Nadada and two Commissioners of Police to Imo to coordinate the rescue. The Imo Police Commissioner said operatives tracked the suspects into the bush and used drones on Friday to pinpoint their location. Police say they have found the suspected camp, but fears of hidden explosives have delayed the rescue.
At the time of the latest report I found, the joint operation was still ongoing, with no official confirmation that the remaining abducted corps members had been rescued.
A Familiar Danger
The attack came weeks after security forces rescued abducted passengers, including corps members, from a forest in Kogi State on 31 August. It has renewed fears among parents and corps members about young graduates travelling long distances across state lines to serve.
What to Watch
Three things remain unclear: the official number abducted, whether the located camp can be safely reached, and whether any ransom talks are under way. Police promised to make the number public once verified. They have also said they are working with the NYSC Directorate to keep families informed.
This is a developing story and will be updated as official statements are released.
